PTA Launches Cybersecurity Task Force

PTA Forms Committee

In a significant move, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has taken the lead in fortifying cybersecurity within the telecom sector. The PTA has formed a Cybersecurity Task Force, a pivotal industry-wide initiative aimed at ensuring the effective execution of the cybersecurity objectives outlined in the strategic plan spanning from 2023 to 2028.

The task force, comprised of Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) from major telecom operators, is poised to receive formal approval from the Authority. With a primary focus on overseeing the implementation progress through regular monthly meetings, the task force aims to closely monitor initiatives, identify potential challenges, and promptly take measures to mitigate any encountered hurdles.

An innovative aspect of this initiative involves transforming each domain under the cybersecurity strategy into Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). These KPIs will be assigned to individual telecom operators, with the task force playing a pivotal role in evaluating their progress. This structured evaluation process is anticipated to enhance accountability, fostering a focused approach toward achieving the set cybersecurity goals for the telecom sector.

Emphasizing responsibility and accountability, the task force members will be held responsible for the successful execution of initiatives outlined in the strategy. The document underscores the importance of coordination with relevant stakeholders, underscoring the collaborative nature of this initiative.

Earlier this month, PTA issued its comprehensive Cyber Security Strategy for Pakistan’s Telecom Sector, spanning the years 2023 to 2028. Built on six foundational pillars targeting legal framework, cyber resilience, proactive monitoring and incident response, capacity building, cooperation and collaboration, and public awareness, the strategy represents a holistic approach to ensuring a resilient and secure digital infrastructure across Pakistan’s telecom sector. This strategic move positions the telecom industry as a responsible stakeholder in proactively addressing cybersecurity challenges through industry-level collaboration.
