Thari women triumph in transforming the region

Thari women in Tharparkar are experiencing transformative empowerment through the Thar Foundation’s pioneering initiatives aimed at enhancing financial inclusion, agency, and socio-economic opportunities.

From excelling as Women Dump Truck Drivers, Solar Plant, and RO Plant Operators to leading sports teams in football and cricket, these women are not only breaking barriers but also venturing into business start-ups focused on skills such as tailoring, embroidery, and handicrafts amongst others.

Beyond providing livelihoods, these programs foster self-sufficiency and independence whilst also enhancing women’s participation in the workforce resulting in holistic empowerment.

Thar Foundation, the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) wing of Thar Block-II entities, maintains a dedicated commitment to the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) framework. Its focus spans interventions on priority areas of SDGs, including the alleviation of poverty, establishment of sustainable livelihoods, improvement of healthcare, education accessibility, and the promotion of gender equality.

Amir Iqbal, Chief Executive Officer of Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC) and Thar Foundation, expressed his enthusiasm for Thari women, stating, “This International Women’s Day, we celebrate an inspire inclusion for the remarkable resilient and game-changing spirit of Thari women. Their unwavering determination paves the path for progress, inspiring a community where every woman has the power to contribute positively.”

“TF continues to provide educational opportunities to over 5,000 students with a focus on 1,500 girl-child. These students spread across 23 school units are aided by over 56 percent female teachers who are empowering this educational journey within the areas of Mithi, Islamkot, and adjoining villages. Moreover, we have trained over 70 females as dump truck drivers; 25 employed on a full-time basis in mining operations. Additionally, 84 local female entrepreneurs have also been provided with business grants to start their ventures,” he added.

He continued, “Thar Foundation is also launching a special program dedicated to enhancing technical and vocational skills among Thari women. This initiative will unlock new avenues of empowerment and inclusivity, ensuring improved skill-set and capabilities for women in the technical domain.”

Singhari Bai, a Dump Truck Women Driver says, “Back then, seeking education and employment were distant dreams. Initially tasked with household chores, my life took a turn when I discovered TF was hiring women. Overcoming fears through training, I now have my own identity, a purpose in life, and a substantial income. I’ve built a home now in Islamkot, ensuring a happier life for my family with improved education for my kids. These programs empower women to showcase their capabilities, leading the way for a brighter future.”

Thar Foundation empowers community upliftment, transforming Thar by providing opportunities in education, vocational training, and employment, with women as unsung heroes shaping the present and future.
